As a big-time referee baiter, Mike Deane believes in the notion of "working the officials" during games. He gives advice, critiques calls and gives helpful suggestions, all while coaching his team.
To hear him, you'd think the refs blow almost every call.
Afterward, he has rarely, if ever, come down hard on the officials. When the Indians were called for 30 fouls and outscored from the free throw line, 31-11, in a game at Niagara, Deane barely mentioned the officials. What about the apparent home-court lean? "We were more aggressive," Deane said at the time. "We did foul more."
