BRISBANE, Aug 6 AAP - Main Stories in today's Courier Mail:

p1 - The Beattie government forced Energex to hand over millions of dollars despite
claims from Energex that it would cripple maintenance, according to documents previously
blacked out by the Beattie government. Struggling sugar farmers are expected to have greater
access to world markets after the World Trade Organisation ruled against the European
Union's sugar subsidies.

p2 - The federal government has hinted at a compromise deal with Labor over the protection
of drug prices in the free trade agreement.

p3 - Brisbane house prices will rise another 12 per cent this financial year but homeowners
can expect a sharp increase in interest rates. From Monday, Brisbane radio listeners will
be able to hear music on the frequency earmarked for the city's first Nova station.

p5 - An initiative to invite European dancers to perform with the Queensland Ballet
has become a sell-out success.

World - US rocker Bruce Springsteen will headline an all-star concert through US swing
states in October to urge voters to vote against President George Bush in the up-coming
election.

Finance - Optus delivered a 51 per cent jump in first-quarter net profits to $151 million,
partly because of strong customer growth in mobile customers and wider margins.

Sport - Bronco's captain Gordon Tallis has hailed reformed Bronco Carl Webb as the
NRL's most damaging ball runner as Brisbane prepares for a showdown with the New Zealand
warriors.
